Epilepsy is a tendency to have recurrent seizures. Also known as fits,
seizures occur from a sudden burst of electrical activity in
the brain. This affects the normal flow of messages from the
brain cells, resulting in a setback of messages being sent or
being mixed up.
A person will experience a seizure that no one else will
experience, because each seizure is unique to that person.
The brain controls all the functions in our body, therefore
a seizure is dependent upon where the epileptic activity begins.
It is also determined by how fast it spreads.

Epilepsy can develop through brain damage, infections to
the brain such as meningitis, a bad blow to the head or in
later age, caused by a bad stroke. The known cause of epilepsy
is called ‘symptomatic’ epilepsy and the unknown cause is
known as ‘idiopathic.’
Depakene - Depakine
- Valproic Acid. Depakene, an epilepsy
medicine, is used to treat certain types of seizures and convulsions.
It may be prescribed alone or with other anticonvulsant medications.
Lamictal - Lamotrigine.
Lamictal is prescribed to control partial seizures in people with epilepsy.
It is also used to control a serious form of epilepsy known as Lennox-Gastaut
syndrome. Lamictal is used in combination with other antiepileptic medications
or as a replacement for a medication such as Tegretol, Dilantin, phenobarbital,
or Mysoline.
Neurontin - Gabatur
- Gabapentin. Neurontin has two uses.
First, it may be prescribed with other medications to treat partial
seizures (the type in which symptoms are limited). It can be used whether
or not the seizures eventually become general and result in loss of
consciousness. Second, it can be used to relieve the burning nerve pain
that sometimes persists for months or even years after an attack of
shingles (herpes zoster).
Tegretol - Carbamazepine
- Carbatrol - Epitol.
Tegretol is used in the treatment of seizure disorders, including certain
types of epilepsy. It is also prescribed for trigeminal neuralgia (severe
pain in the jaws) and pain in the tongue and throat. In addition, some
doctors use Tegretol to treat alcohol withdrawal, cocaine addiction,
and emotional disorders such as depression and abnormally aggressive
behavior. The drug is also used to treat migraine headache and "restless
legs."
Topamax - Topiramate. Topamax is an
antiepileptic drug, prescribed to control both the mild attacks known
as partial seizures and the severe tonic-clonic convulsions known as
grand mal seizures. It is typically added to the treatment regimen when
other drugs fail to fully control a patient's attacks.
It is difficult to diagnose epilepsy unless you contact
a specialist in epilepsy, test results of an electroencephalogram
which records brain patterns and also witnesses that saw
the seizure take place. It is thought that in the UK one
in twenty people will have a seizure at some point in there
life, but this does not mean they have epilepsy. One in
131 people have epilepsy and so more than one seizure has
to occur before you will be considered by a specialist to
have the condition.
There is no cure for epilepsy at the moment
but it can be controlled with the correct anti-epileptic
medication. It is thought that up to 70% of seizures can
be controlled through the use of this medicine.
